Facing the Future: Global Education at the Crossroads

When we see the face of a child, we think of the future. We think of their dreams about what they might become, and what they might accomplish. But today, there are 72 million children in the world who have had at least part of their futures stolen from them. That's because they've been denied a basic education.

The international community promised to provide universal primary education at the 2000 World Education Forum in Dakar, Senegal, where world leaders made commitments to education and our world's most valuable resource -- children. But a decade later the basic human right to education for all is still denied. Despite the countless summits, high-level meetings and high-blown rhetoric, progress toward the United Nations' Education for All goal of universal primary education by 2015 has been disappointing, and as the Global Monitoring Report ominously cites, "We are heading steadfastly for an avoidable failure." 64m More People to Live in Extreme Poverty Worldwide

Because of the global financial crisis and ensuring global recession, some 64 million more people will be living in extreme poverty by 2010.

Because of the continuing global recession, some 64 million more people will be living in extreme poverty by 2010, the World Bank said in a report released Tuesday.

Because of the global financial crisis and ensuring global recession, some 64 million more people will be living in extreme poverty by 2010, the World Bank said in a report released on Tuesday.

The crisis and recession have substantially increased the challenge of meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) targets, according to the World Development Indicator (WDI) 2010 released by the Bank.

During 2000-2008, low and middle income countries averaged economic growth of 6.2 percent a year, and during 1999-2005 the number of people living on less than 1.25 dollars a day fell by 325 million. Read more

When things get rough, the children are always the first victims

About 52 million Filipinos will be out of job by 2030 according to the report released by the Asian Development Bank.

In countries like in the Philippines, when economic hardships strike, among the first victims are the children. They have to drop school and many of them will end up as street children. Ignorance and lack of education are root causes of poverty.

The UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) commit to achieve universal primary education by 2015; that is four years away from now and we are still far from the target. The fact sheet provides a good overview on why it is important that boys and girls should go to school.

According to the UNDP better education is fundamental to the prospects for economic and social development and the end of world poverty. If millions of children do not acquire education today, we are faced with a future generation with millions of people without basic skills and knowledge to be enable them to contribute productively to the social and economic well-being of the nation.

Unfortunately, despite the call of the United Nations, many governments including the Philippines lack the political will to address the acute issue related to education. Millions of poor families have already hard time to send their children to acquire primary education all the more they cannot support high school and college education widening the gap between the rich and the poor.

There is a need to invest on education. Those who can afford should try to support even one child at a time wherever they are and ensure that no one is left behind.

SWS: More Filipinos are going hungry

MANILA, Philippines—Filipinos have adjusted to a miserable life that self-rated poverty matched a record-low posted over two decades ago although a record number experienced involuntary hunger, a Social Weather Stations survey (SWS) showed.

Of the 2,100 registered voters interviewed from March 19 to 22 by SWS, 43 percent (representing 8.1 million families) considered themselves poor, matching the record-low self-rated poverty set in March 1987.

A record-low 31 percent (5.9 million families) said they were food-poor. The previous record-low was 35 percent, set in June 2004.

However, the proportion of families that went hungry due to lack of food in the past three months remained relatively high—21.2 percent (4 million families), just 3 percentage points below the record-high 24 percent set in December. Read more

Earth Day Celebration

WIMLER in cooperation with Damayan, Association of Bansalenos Worldwide (ABW), HAPNID, and Holy Cross College of Bansalan Batch 1983 is organizing activities in conjunction with the Earth Day.

The event will be held on April 25, 2010 in Bansalan, Davao del Sur, Philippines. The yearly event will be opened with a mass parade and followed by various activities such as kite flying contest and poster and slogan making contest. The organizers this year decided to introduce traditional Filipino games that are already long forgotten or strangers to the young generation. The games in Cebuano will consist of: tubig-tubig, luksong lubid (jump rope), shatong or siatong, pot breaking, tumba lata, bending, etc.

For more information about Filipino traditional games, this blog is worth reading.
